Ocean Springs Yacht Club offering sailing summer camp

Local would-be sailors are learning to set sail at a summer camp

The Ocean Springs Yacht Club hosts a two-week summer session to teach children the basics of sailing.

The kids learn how to steer a sail as well as how to maintain the boat. Students also learn how to read winds and tread the tides and understand the weather changes.

For many kids its their first time learning how to operate a boat as camp instructors try to instill skills the kids can use in the future.

Camp Director Amanda Romano said, “Really instill the importance of swimming because we are all growing up around the water. We are always talking about the weather everyday and so they are looking at the sky.”

Sailing Instructor Fynn Erichsen said, “We teach them the wind clock. So they need to learn what’s the fastest way to sail to get to your finish line.“
