Ocean Springs woman named 2023 Thunder over the Sound Hometown Hero

An Ocean Springs woman was honored by the Thunderbirds today for her community service on the Gulf Coast.

Amber Olsen, director and founder of the United MSD Foundation, was nominated by her peers to be the Hometown Hero for the 2023 Thunder over the Sound Air and Space Show.

Olsen was gifted with a 70th anniversary lithograph from the Thunderbirds. She also received an Air Force Coin of Excellence from the base commander and an American flag patch.

In 2016, Olsen’s daughter was diagnosed with a multiple sulfatase disease, a rare genetic disease which leaves her body unable to get rid of cellular waste.

Olsen accepted the award on behalf of her daughter. “Seeing her every day, she’s battling something I hope I never have to go through. Seeing her struggle to do everything, I just want to fight for her.”
