Ocean Springs Theatre named state champions

A show-stopping performance finally got some recognition it richly deserves.

This past weekend, Ocean Springs Theatre and Film Department attended the Mississippi Theatre Association Competition in Tupelo, where they were named the state champions for their production of “Bocon!”

“Bocon” is Spanish for ‘big mouth’ and it tells the story of the main character finding his freedom and his voice by reaching the border.

Along with winning best production, Ocean Springs senior Xavier Reichbaum was awarded best male actor at MTA. He shares what this life changing moment meant to him. “That was a very, very special moment for me. I’m just so passionate about it, passionate about the art form, it’s what I want to do, so winning that award in front of all those many, many people meant the world to me.”

Ocean Springs Theatre Director Chris Permenter said, “What makes this group special is that they all are such strong, talented kids. Coming together on a show like this takes a lot of collaboration and cooperation, and the vibe every day is just 100. It’s great to come in, and work with these creatives that are excited to come in every day for rehearsal and think of something new, come in with ideas, so it’s a great experience.”

Because they won state, the program is invited to compete in the national competition called SETC.

That national competition is March 1st through the 5th. If you would like to donate, reach out to the Ocean Springs Theatre on Facebook or Instagram.
