Ocean Springs Softball’s historic run ends in State Championship heartbreak with 9-7 loss

The final day of the MHSAA State Championship delivered every ounce of drama you could ask for, as the Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds stepped onto the field for a decisive Game Three — a true dogfight for the title and a chance to cement their place in school history.
Just like in Game Two, Ocean Springs came out swinging. Junior first baseman Laynee Davis lifted a deep fly ball to the warning track — plenty far enough for Kerrigan Scott to tag and score with ease, giving the Lady Greyhounds the first run of the game. On the mound, senior ace Emma Franklin opened with heat, firing a dominant 3 up, 3 down first inning, but Hernando answered quickly, plating one run in the first and another in the second to take a 2–1 lead.
In the fourth inning, sophomore catcher Gracie Shepherd stepped up and delivered the moment of the night. She launched a towering shot to center field — going, going, gone! — a solo home run that tied the game 2–2 and electrified the Greyhound dugout.
Hernando regained the lead with two runs in the fifth, but Ocean Springs wasn’t done. In the top of the sixth, the Lady Greyhounds exploded for five runs thanks to runs batted in by Addison Johnson, Kerrigan Scott, K’Lee Gum and Taylor Farra.
In heartbreaking fashion, Hernando matched the five run surge with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, reclaiming the lead for good. The Ocean Springs Lady Greyhounds fell 9–7 in the decisive Game Three, ending their championship bid just short of the crown, but the loss doesn’t overshadow what they accomplished. This team made school history, reaching the state championship stage for the first time ever — and battling until the final out.
