Ocean Springs native McCarty English to get Sunday start for Golden Eagles!
For the first time in his collegiate career, McCarty English was named a weekend starter for Southern Miss’s opening weekend! The Ocean Springs right-hander has gotten the nod for Sunday, but the journey on the mound hasn’t been easy for the redshirt sophomore.
After throwing lights out his freshman campaign and being one of Head Coach Christian Ostrander’s go-to’s out of the pen, English was faced with injury, resulting in Tommy John surgery midseason. He recovered soon after and was able to pitch the following season, but still faced adversity. A screw in his elbow from the surgery produced discomfort, hindering English to perform his best.
English got the screw out this past July, and worked with Coach Ostrander and new pitching coach, Gunner Leger, over the summer. When it came to fall scrimmages, English started looking like himself again on the mound. Not only did he gain confidence in himself, but gained trust in Coach Ostrander.
After almost two years of battling injuries, English will take the mound Sunday, February 15th in a rubber match against UC Santa Barbara. We wish McCarty and the rest of the Golden Eagles good luck as they battle to win the first series of the season!
