Ocean Springs’ McCarty English reflects on journey to Tampa Bay Rays draft selection
OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. — A lifelong dream became reality for Ocean Springs native McCarty English this past weekend when he heard his name called in the Major League Baseball Draft.
The former Ocean Springs standout and Southern Miss pitcher was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays, marking the beginning of his professional baseball career after years of dedication, perseverance, and faith.
“It was a long day of waiting, but I trust God’s timing in everything, and looking down and finally seeing that call was something special,” English said. “It’s crazy. If I told myself 10 to 15 years ago that I would be standing here where I am today, I don’t know if I’d believe you. Finally achieving that dream and everything I’ve been working toward for my whole life is real life, and it’s crazy to think about.”
English’s journey to professional baseball wasn’t without adversity.
After starring on the mound at Ocean Springs High School, he continued his career at Southern Miss. During his freshman season, however, he suffered an injury that required Tommy John surgery, forcing him to spend months recovering and working his way back to the field.
Looking back, English said his faith helped him navigate the difficult moments.
“I think the biggest thing for me was leaning on God,” he said. “Trusting His process and trusting that He’s doing everything He’s doing for a reason. It wasn’t easy at times. I felt like I was at the lowest of lows, and all of that was built to this moment. Seeing His plan come into play has been really special.”
As he prepares for the next chapter of his baseball career, English says he’ll always be proud to represent both his hometown and his college program.
“That means everything,” he said. “I love my city. It was really great to play for Ocean Springs and play for Southern Miss. Everything I’ve done in the past has built up to this moment, and I’m glad I’ve had a great place to represent and do everything I can for.”
English is scheduled to report to Tampa Bay on Wednesday as he officially begins his professional career in the Rays organization.
For the Ocean Springs native, the call from the Rays was more than just the fulfillment of a childhood dream—it was the culmination of years of hard work, resilience, and unwavering belief that every challenge along the way was preparing him for this moment.
