Ocean Springs community speaks out against bullying

It’s been a sad week in Ocean Springs after a young teen at Ocean Springs Middle School died.

“This could be your daughter! Stop bullying!” A call for help from bullying victims and concerned parents. Demonstrators gathered at Ocean Springs Middle School to speak out against bullying. Multiple parents with children in the Ocean Springs School District claim that bullying is on the rise and the school district isn’t doing enough.

Former Ocean Springs student Kendyl Weiss says she was a victim of bullying at Ocean Springs School District and nothing was done to help her. “I was bullied here at the middle school and it needs to stop. Because the school isn’t doing anything to stop it. I got called annoying, I got called the b word, I was threatened in the hallways.”

This comes after Ocean Springs Middle School eighth grader Aubreigh Paige Wyatt died on September 4th. The cause of Aubreigh’s death is under investigation, but her mother said in a social media post that words killed her daughter.

The school district made a memorial to Aubreigh outside of the middle school and resources outside of the middle school and resources for students are available including counseling services.

Ocean Springs School District Superintendent Michael Lindsey declined to comment when asked if bullying at the school contributed to Aubriegh’s death, but he shares his deepest condolences with her family. “It’s tough for everyone. I’ve spoken to Mrs. Wyatt and our prayers go out to Mrs. Wyatt. I want to make sure and explain this to them that the district supports them.”

Visitation will be held from 1:30 to 3:30 at St. Paul United Methodist Church’s East Campus on Sunday, September 10th. Aubreigh’s funeral will begin at 3:30 p.m.
