Ocean Springs Bus Driver in Court
The trial for the former Ocean Springs School District bus driver accused of inappropriately touching a student back in 2014 began today.
Sergio Sandoval is accused of sexually assaulting an eight-year-old girl on multiple occasions in 2014 while other children were on the school bus.
Prosecutors asked the jury to find Sandoval guilty of four counts of touching a child for lustful purposes and one count of sexual battery, telling the jury the young girl’s innocence was stripped away from her at the hands of Sandoval.
Prosecutors went into graphic detail about the sexual abuse that allegedly took place between September 15th and October 7th, 2014. The defense asked the jury not to be swayed by sympathy or prejudice. The jury also heard from several witnesses including the principal of Oak Park Elementary and the Ocean Springs School District transportation supervisor who oversaw bus drivers during the time of the alleged crimes.
An attorney representing the school board was in the courtroom today. Ocean Springs School District Attorney Alwyn Luckey said, “It’s my hope that we get down to the truth of all this and justice be done. If the bus driver in question is guilty then he certainly should be convicted. If he’s innocent then I hope the jury will find that. What we’re looking for here is a fair trial and the truth to come out.”
The jury was also shown clips of surveillance video taken from the bus driven by Sandoval. The prosecution says this video shows the alleged abuse happening.
