Ocean Springs alum being used as ‘swiss army knife’ for Mississippi State

Austin Williams was the second leading receiver for Mississippi State, going for 46 yards on three receptions, one of those being a fourth quarter touchdown.

The former Ocean Springs Greyhound’s other highlight reel play was a 28-yard catch and run that would later lead to an MSU touchdown right before the end of the first half.

But after the game, all the buzz was about his high-point reception in the corner of the end zone. Williams said, “I saw it was man coverage and I had a lot of room to work in the corner so I was trying to make it happen. It was a perfect throw, all I had to do was catch it.”

Quarterback Tommy Stevens said, “Yeah, it was awesome. Great play. Was able to throw it up, let him make a play and he really went up and got it. So excited for him, great guy. Really good football player, too. Very glad he was able to step up.”

Head Coach Joe Moorhead said, “I told Austin he’s got to be like our Swiss Army Knife this year, where you brought some other guys in. Payton and Zuber and some other guys are stepping up and there’s kind of a backlog at that slot position. But Austin knows the X, he knows the Y, he knows the Z. And at any point during the game he can go in and function at all three. And a guy that when he was called upon, got his opportunity and I was happy for him. Cause he’s a great team guy, and when he gets his opportunity he makes plays.”

Williams says it was an awesome experience getting to play in the Superdome, growing up on the Gulf Coast in New Orleans Saints country.
