Ocean Springs alum McCarty English makes Division I pitching debut with Southern Miss

Opening day for college baseball took place this past weekend, and the Southern Miss Golden Eagles hosted Marist for their opening series. The Golden Eagles started off the series strong defeating Marist 4-1 on Friday, and then again on Saturday with a final score of 10-5, but they fell short on Sunday with a final score of 3-6. Southern Miss with nothing to hang their head about though, as they do win their first series of 2024.

One player that contributed to the big win on Saturday was ocean springs alum, McCarty English! The true freshman and right handed pitcher got the nod in the seventh inning, retiring six of the seven batters faced, adding two strikeouts to his name.

Head Coach Christian Ostrander was very pleased with English’s Division I debut.

“I mean he’s a bulldog you know. He doesn’t act like a freshman. He was coming after them and then I think with one of those strikeouts, it was a 3-2 count and he lands that curve ball, and he’s showed us that before in scrimmages and stuff and that’s not the easiest thing to do sometimes, but he’s got confidence and he’s got good stuff and I’m very proud of him and what he did getting his feet wet and getting out there for the first time,” Coach Ostrander said post game.

“It means the world and I wouldn’t be able to do any of it without God and I’m thankful for the opportunity and I’m looking forward to doing it again,” English said. “I was ready for it. It’s very, very nice to get the first one out of the way and just looking forward to the rest of the season.”

Congratulations to you, McCarty! English and the rest of the Golden Eagles will take on the Air Force baseball program tonight at The Pete at 4pm.
