Number of teacher vacancies in Mississippi schools increases in 2022 – 2023 school year
Results from the Mississippi Department of Education’s educator shortage survey show there are over 5000 vacancies among teachers, administrators, and school support staff across the state – an increase of 24 compared to the 2022 – 2023 school year.
Compared to last year, vacancies increased by 182 teachers, nine K-12 licensed educators, and by 25 among administrators.
On the other side, vacancies decreased by 192 among K-12 support staff such as teacher assistants, nurses, custodians, bus drivers, and food service staff.
Teacher vacancies increased by 57 in the coast’s district while vacancies decreased by 307 in the Pine Belt.
The University of Southern Mississippi received a Teacher Quality Partnership grant from the U.S. Department of Education, helping schools in Jackson County with this issue.
