North HWY 49 at RR Crossing near I-10 closed for up to a week

The Highway 49 closure in Gulfport we’ve been telling you about is now in effect. It’s going to be causing major detours for the next two weeks.

The northbound lanes of 49 at the tracks near I-10 are officially closed. This is the railroad crossing near Creosote Road and the entrance to the Gulfport Premium Outlets.

The northbound lanes of Highway 49 at the tracks will stay closed for up to a week, which means all northbound traffic there is being rerouted.

Immediately after that, the southbound lanes of Highway 49 at the tracks will close for up to five days, which will also close the southbound Highway 49 exits off I-10.

Once that work is complete, all lanes of Highway 49 will be closed for two days to replace the tracks. MDOT 6th District Engineer Kelly Castleberry said, “They are going to remove the entire crossing and when they remove that crossing, they are coming in with a brand-new crossing. So, it’s going completely different than what it is now. Right now, motorists are encountering a little bit of delay as they cross it because the tracks are uneven. There has been some panels that are broken. When they get done, they will have all of that fixed, and hopefully motorists will have a lot better commute in the morning.”

You can expect heavy delays on 49 as well as detour routes.
