North Bay Students Learn About Stranger Danger with Puppets

Thursday, students at North Bay Elementary School learned important lessons from some very special visitors.

The Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary held a puppet show for kindergarteners, first, and second graders. These puppets taught students about strangers, sexual abuse, physical abuse, and general worry, relaying the important message that kids should not be afraid to go to an adult if something uncomfortable is happening to them.

Jessica Cloyd, a representative of the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Junior Auxiliary, says, “So this program with the puppets is really geared towards the age group that we hit, kindergarten through second, sometimes third grade. It kind of breaks it down and does it in a nonthreatening way, so it’s really easy to start that dialogue, and then hopefully if kids do have an issue. They can go forth after seeing it and talk to a teacher.”

After the presentation, students were asked about what they had just seen, to reinforce the importance of feeling safe and being able to talk to adults about these issues.
