Nonprofits Brace for New Law

Local nonprofits are preparing for a new federal rule that would increase the number of people eligible for overtime pay.
The rule would boost the salary threshold for overtime exemption from $23,600 annually to $47,467 annually.
While the new rule is beneficial for some employees, Executive Director of the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum Kevin O’Brien says it puts nonprofits between a rock and a hard place. “Those same people that put in 60 and 70 hours a week, now either cannot work those extra hours or they’ll get paid time and half, which is great for them, but for the organizations, it really puts a crimp in our budget.”
In an industry where planning and fundraisers result in long hours for most employees, Gulf Coast nonprofits continue to crunch numbers and strategize before the law takes effect December 1st.
