No threat after handgun found in student backpack at Hancock High

A handgun was found in a student’s backpack this afternoon at Hancock High School, officials said in an email sent to media.

The school resource officer and administration immediately implemented safety procedures once the weapon was found. The incident was investigated and resolved, the school said.

The school said there was no threat to students.

Hancock County School District reiterated its commitment to student safety in the email.

The email did not say whether the student was arrested.
