No More Motor Vehicle for Hire?

Today was a small victory for independent taxi cab drivers on the Coast.
For years now, independent cab drivers have asked the city of Biloxi to end their relationship with the Motor Vehicle for Hire Authority because of the restrictive regulations placed on drivers. In a 3 to 2 vote, the Biloxi City Council decided to give a 90 day notice saying they will withdraw from the authority unless another solution is found.
City Council Vice President Robert Deming tells News 25 after four years, this is a huge step towards a final resolution. “We have 90 days to prepare our own rules and regulations and we’ve been working on this for a long time. This kind of puts a time limit and says ‘hey, we’ve got to get serious about this.’ And we’ve already discussed this with the Motor Vehicle for Hire Authority, so if we can come up with our own rules and regulations that we perfect or a compromise with them, we’ll have to have this resolved within 90 days.”
Council Vice President Robert Deming tells News 25 he believes a system more effective and efficient for the taxi cab industry will ultimately be the result.
The city still has to calculate what it would cost taxpayers if they take over the taxi cab industry.
