No date yet for Amtrak rail service

Now that Mobile has jumped on board with Amtrak to resume a passenger rail line to New Orleans, the big question is when will it start?

The short answer is, not yet.

The Southern Rail Commission updated its membership this morning about the status of the Mobile to New Orleans line and the big takeaway is that a contract has been awarded to build a temporary platform in Mobile.

Before construction can begin, utilities have to be moved at the station site. Construction is expected to begin this fall.

Once that is in motion, the SRC will have a better handle on when the rail line can begin service.
