BILOXI, MS – Top prospect Jackson Chourio’s three-run blast off number eight prospect Eury Pérez guided the Biloxi Shuckers to a 7-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos in front of 3,202 fans at MGM Park in the first Fireworks Friday match-up of the season.
With the win, the Shuckers improved to 5-2 on the year, the best record in the Southern League. The win was also the fourth in Biloxi’s last five games.
The game started as a pitcher’s duel between Christian Mejias and Pérez. Mejias, in his first start in the Brewers organization, dazzled to the tune of eight strikeouts and one hit over five shutout innings to earn the win.
In the first, two errors and a balk put Lamar Sparks at third for a Tyler Black double, his second extra-base hit in as many games, that gave the Shuckers a 1-0 lead.
The two pitchers battled over the next three innings before the Shuckers exploded in the fifth. A Felix Valerio single, his first of the year, started the offense. Carlos Rodriguez then walked before Freddy Zamora drove in Valerio with a double. Two batters later, Chourio slammed a ball off the foul pole in left field to give the Shuckers a commanding 5-0 lead. The home run was his third of the year, all coming against Pensacola.
Pensacola plated their first run of the night in the sixth with an RBI groundout from José Devers. The Shuckers responded with a run in the seventh with Zamora’s first home run of the year and another in the eighth when Wes Clarke scampered home after an error.
The Shuckers return to action on Saturday night with a chance to take the series against Pensacola. Carlos Rodriguez is set to start for Biloxi after four shutout innings with eight strikeouts last weekend against Mississippi. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. on Jackie Robinson Day and Biloxi Southern Negro League Night. Tyler’s Amazing Balancing Act will also be in attendance for the first Shuck Yeah Saturday of the season.
