New resident at the Hattiesburg Zoo: Meet Birkenstock!
HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WXXV)- The Hattiesburg Zoo has announced they have a new resident.
Birkenstock is a Screaming Hairy Armadillo, who came to the zoo from the Audubon Zoo in New Orleans.
He is one year and six months old.
Birkenstock will serve as a zoo ambassador, traveling with an education staff to schools, churches, and libraries, as well as making media appearances to educate youth across the state.
Screaming Hairy Armadillos are native to South America and they love to burrow in sand. They eat plants, insects, and small vertebrates.
They also live up to nine years and get their name from the squeal they make when threatened.
Birkenstock can be found at the Asbury Discovery Center.
