New Proposal for Motor Vehicle for Hire
It’s a debate that’s been going on for years: should the city of Biloxi end its relationship with the Motor Vehicle for Hire Authority?
Biloxi taxi cab drivers say the authority places too many restrictive regulations on drivers. This afternoon, the Biloxi City Council looked at a proposal many think could help solve this lingering problem. The new proposal would establish a Motor Vehicle for Hire Office under the supervision of the Code Enforcement Office in the Community Development Department for the city of Biloxi. This new office would administer, enforce, and regulate operation of motor vehicles for hire in the city.
Biloxi Councilman Robert Deming said, “I think it’s a little premature to say what it would mean for the MVHA. What we’re doing in Biloxi, in my opinion, is making it easier to operate in the city of Biloxi. I think what we need to do is look at making the regulatory and financial burdens smaller on these small business owners in our city.”
While the council did not make a final decision today, the general consensus is that the city would like to remain a member of the coast-wide group, considering certain changes are made.
