New pickleball courts at the Lyman Senior Center
There’s a new spot for pickleballers to play on the Coast. The Lyman Senior Center has added new courts for anyone wanting to give the game a try.
Lyman Senior Center Assistant Director Sabrina Storey said, “I love it. It’s very addictive. It’s good, constructive competition and you can always challenge yourself to be better at pickleball.”
There are two new pickleball courts at the Lyman Senior Center. The courts are slightly smaller than the standard size, making it the perfect place to learn, but beginners beware it can become addictive. Pickleball player Leon Wallace said, “I used to play tennis, golf, racquetball, and ping-pong. This is a mixture of all of those, but I gave up pretty much all of them for this.”
Wallace picked up a paddle four years ago and hasn’t put it down since. He tells everyone interested to give the game a swing. “Don’t wait. So many people think they can’t do it or they won’t be the right skill level, but there’s all kinds of skill levels out there. It’s everywhere. You probably won’t have to drive more than five to 10 miles to get to one.”
USA Pickleball Ambassador Andrea Robertson said, “We have indoor and outdoor facilities all over the Coast. You can contact your parks and recs departments in any of the counties or cities and they’ll let you know where the courts are. The best thing about it is that it gets your joints moving and the doctor said you need to walk, you need to move, you need to exercise. My health is much better now because of it.”
Pickleball is a great aerobic workout for all ages. “Just show up. There is equipment there. There are balls there and people are always willing to teach because we love having new players.”
The pickleball courts at the Lyman Senior Center will be open again this Friday. Starting April 27th, there will be regular play on every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8 a.m. until noon.
