New parking lot and statue nearing completion at Biloxi Lighthouse

The City of Biloxi is nearing the competition of its half a million-dollar lighthouse parking lot project.

This project has been in the works since Cruisin’ the Coast to try and make the lot more accessible for residents.

The lot will be expanding from about 78 parking spots to about 178 with 12 of them being handicapped.

City officials hope this lot will be completed within the next few days.

On February 13th, a statue of astronaut and Biloxi native Fred Haise will be revealed in the same lot. The statue will be unveiled at 1:13 that day which is 13:13 in military time.

The time was chosen to honor Haise’s part in the Apollo 13 mission. City of Biloxi Public Affairs Manager Vincent Creel said, “Here in Biloxi, it’s going to be Fred Haise day. We’re going to be saluting an American hero, a Biloxi native, who was a space pioneer and a fighter pilot. All of those things, we are finally being able to recognize him with a statue here in Biloxi.”

The statue reveal will be a public event for anyone who wants to stop by and honor Mr. Haise.
