New Orleans Saints expected to release former All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas “soon” according to Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com

There have been question marks swirling the New Orleans Saints organization since the regular season came to an end in January. Who will be the head coach? Will Derek Carr still be in the black and gold? What about Alvin Kamara?

Those questions, and many more, have been answered.

On Thursday, an answer to the Saints plans for former All-Pro wide receiver Michael Thomas were likely answered.

The New Orleans Saints are planning to part ways with Thomas, first reported by Jeff Duncan of the Times Picayune and NOLA.com. The former All-Pro is expected to be released at some point before the start of the league year, which begins March 13th.

Since the news broke, Thomas has taken to social media to voice his opinions. According to Thomas, the word “released” is incorrect.

The situation is a bit tricky to understand and here is why. When Thomas signed his most recent contract extension, it was done so with the idea that he would be a free agent come this off-season. After the reconstruction of his contract, some of the numbers would still be on the organizations books should he choose to sign elsewhere this year – which is why the term “released” was used.

Neither side is technically wrong, but it is safe to say that Thomas was not happy with how things were reported. He took to the social media platform X to call Duncan a “clown” and other derogatory names.

Putting right and wrong aside – it’s evident that Thomas’s time in the Big Easy is quickly coming to an end.

In 2019 the Saints receiver was named Offensive Player of the Year with one of, if not the best, season by a pass catcher in league history. Thomas recorded an NFL single-season record 149 receptions, including 1,725 yards and nine touchdowns.

Since then he has been riddled with injuries. Failing to come close to his 2019 totals in the last three seasons combined and missing 47 games over that span.
