New lighting added to Biloxi skatepark
BILOXI, Miss. (WXXV)- Skaters along the Mississippi Gulf Coast now have more time to ride in Biloxi.
City officials have added lighting to the DIY skatepark, allowing it to stay open after dark and recognizing what many say has become an important community gathering spot.
The new lighting allows skaters to safely use the space after dark, something local riders say was much needed.
Originally meant to be temporary, the DIY skatepark has grown into a heavily used public space drawing skaters of all ages and becoming a regular community hangout.
As its popularity increased, so did calls for something more permanent. Advocates continue to push for a concrete skatepark and more than 1,700 people have signed a petition supporting that effort.
While the new lighting doesn’t settle the long-term question of a permanent skatepark, it does support the existing space making it safer and more accessible for the community that’s built around it.
While discussions about a permanent skate park continue, skaters say the added lights are a step forward.
