New housing project in Pass Christian
The city of Pass Christian recently received a grant that allows them to begin development on the St. Paul Village project on Scenic Ave
The property is the former location of the St. Paul Catholic Church and has remained vacant since 2005 after being destroyed during Hurricane Katrina.
“And the rest of the property has been vacant for 19 years since Hurricane Katrina and we were very fortunate. With the help of our state legislators, we were able to get a 1.5-million-dollar grant.”
Mayor Rafferty also expressed his excitement about the potential economic benefits that will come with the project.
“It’s gonna be a boom for our small businesses in town, our restaurants, our giftshops. That’s gonna be a great thing, having 36 families frequenting those places.”
In addition to the St. Paul Village project, the city also discussed the banning of food trucks and vendors at all future Mardi Gras parades.
“It’s the issue of safety. Last year we had 16 food trucks that managed to position themselves right in the heart of town. We’ve been parading for over 100 years. It’s a wonderful parade, one of the best on the coast and it’s all about fun and safety. And in this case, safety is trumping fun in this regard.”
The St. Paul Village project is set to begin construction within the next month.
