New executive director named for Mississippi Regional Housing Authority VIII

The largest housing agency in the state of Mississippi has a new executive director.

Coming from Virginia, Justin Brooks is taking over the state’s Regional Housing Authority VIII.

On Wednesday morning, Gulfport PD provided active shooter training for all of the employees and the new executive director was in attendance.

Brooks hopes his employees will never have to be in a scenario like that, but he wants them to be successful if they ever find themselves in an active shooter situation.

The organization has been in existence for over 60 years and operates hub programs for the state’s lower 14 counties with offices in Gulfport, Hattiesburg, and Moss Point.

Their mission is to provide affordable housing to eligible people within our community while creating and promoting opportunities for independence, self-sufficiency, and an improved quality of life. Brooks said, “So, we’ve had a very rich tradition of being builders here in South Mississippi in response to Katrina and other events. So, now we want to shift that focus from housing and assets to building to people to break the cycle of generational poverty.”

For the last 17 years, Brooks has worked exclusively in housing and community development, served as the senior director at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development as well as executive roles in private and public sectors.
