New Cranes Headed to Port of Gulfport

Cranes that will revolutionize how the Port of Gulfport operates are well on their way to the Coast.
After 18 months of construction, three gantry cranes left Shanghai earlier this month and are on vessels en route to Gulfport. All three cranes cost $30 million total and were paid for with restoration HUD money from Katrina.
When it comes to cargo and container handling, the new cranes will completely change how the port does business. When their boom is raised, the cranes will stretch as high as 330 feet and will be able to handle anything at or below 65 tons. Port of Gulfport Executive Director Jonathan Daniels said, “The load capacity, the efficiency on these cranes, it’s the best practice that we can install for putting new cranes in. It gives us flexibility that is necessary. It gives us efficiency that the carriers and shippers are looking for. We do have very good mobile harbor cranes right now. We will not be disposing of those. We’ll be using those because it gives us redundant capacity throughout the port. So, we have as much crane capacity as any port our size in the nation. This really brings us into the next generation of container and cargo handling by bringing these cranes in.”
Port Authority officials tell News 25 the cranes should arrive to the Coast on March 20th.
