New Airport Road Roundabout

If you have driven on Airport Road in Gulfport, you may have noticed a new roundabout circle.
This was the third and final step to the $3 million construction project, including road-widening on Creosote and Three Rivers Road.
According to Gulfport police, there have been no reported accidents since the circle opened in mid-December.
The engineers behind the project tell News 25 roundabouts have a long list of benefits including safety, a steady flow of traffic, and aesthetics but they still hear mixed reactions from Coast residents. Design Engineer Dax Alexander said, “Some have said ‘man, it is great’ and are glad we have it and some have said ‘well, why do we need a roundabout there’ and that kind of thing. I think as folks use them more and realize that they minimize wait time and it minimizes accidents and makes it, overall, a more safe intersection. I think folks will like them.”
The city of Gulfport and the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport are currently teaming up to put a welcome sign in the middle of the roundabout.
