NCBC Gulfport cleans up oil spill

The United States Navy completed a clean-up operation following a discharge of 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel from NCBC Gulfport’s microgrid system last week.

The spill happened on March 9, prompting cleanup efforts from contractors trained in oil spill removal.

Members of the Navy on-scene coordinator program arrived on the scene March 11, leading remediation and restoration efforts.

They also evaluated the site for environmental impacts.

Throughout the clean-up process, regular updates were provided to residents of the area ensuring full awareness of the progress being made.

The Navy on-scene coordinator worked closely with state officials to ensure the response met federal and state requirements.

An investigation of the cause of the spill, including troubleshooting of the involved equipment, is ongoing as teams work to eliminate future concerns.
