NCAA Division I early signing period approved by Collegiate Commissioners Association
Last month, the NCAA’s Division I Football Council approved an early signing period. Today, the Collegiate Commissioners Association made that signing period a reality.
The new window for high school students to sign will be December 20th through the 22nd which is the same as the mid-year junior college signing period. The traditional signing day on the first Wednesday in February will also remain.
Mississippi Head Coach Dan Mullen is on the oversight committee. He’s been part of the discussions regarding an extra date. When asked about the December date during the Road Dawgs Tour in Biloxi two weeks ago, Mullen says time will tell. “We’ll see how December plays out. I think there was a lot of discussion, people wanted it earlier than that, but I think we kind of settled, let’s see what happens with December and see what goes through. I don’t know what my feeling is on it just yet. I want to see what plays out and learn more about it and then we’ll be able to know if it was a good thing, a bad thing or if we have to change it more.”
Ole Miss Head Coach Hugh Freeze has previously said he was in favor of a December period. However, he did not favor a proposed period in June.
