Navy Seal who jumped in Gulfport dies
A member of the Navy Seal’s elite parachute team who jumped in Gulfport alongside Mayor Billy Hewes last month died Sunday during a fleet week event.
The Navy says Peters died conducting a jump with his team, known as the Leap Frogs, in New Jersey.
Special Warfare Operator 1st Class Remington Peters jumped with the Leap Frogs and Mayor Hewes at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport.
The Navy Mid-Atlantic Region Commander says Peters’ parachute malfunctioned and he plunged into the New York Harbor. A moment of silence was held for the 27-year-old at a Memorial Day ceremony at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum in New York City. The ceremony included Veteran’s throwing a wreath into the water to honor Peters and other men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces.
Peters’ family says the accomplishments of their courageous warrior far outweigh his years.
Mayor Billy Hewes commented on the tragedy on his Facebook page, writing: “This is such tragic news. It was an honor to have met Remington Peters and his elite U.S. Navy parachute team ‘The Leap Frogs.’ While all members were exceptional during their time on the Gulf Coast during Navy Week, Mr. Peters was a standout. Highly professional and extremely personable, Remi struck me as the kind of son and friend we would all like to have. An exemplary ambassador for the U.S. Navy, he truly enjoyed what he did.”
