Navy sailors fix up Salvation Army

The Salvation Army’s Command Center in Gulfport got a little facelift today thanks to a group of Navy sailors, all part of Mississippi Gulf Coast Navy Week.
Today, 16 sailors who serve our country were out serving the community, fixing up a few things at the command center that needed a little extra attention. The Navy members power washed the exterior, stripped and waxed the floors, touched up the paint and more.
The sailors tell News 25 they’re happy to give back and the Salvation Army appreciates the gesture. Operations Specialist Third Class Deavan Samuels said, “I think it’s important to just kind of give back you know. We do a lot for civilians, but they also do a lot for us. Once we go overseas, they hold it down here for us so that our families and everybody else is safe and taken care of.”
Salvation Army Grant Writer and Volunteer Coordinator Zach Rhodes said, “People in this building rely on this building for a wide variety of reasons, for social services, for homeless shelters, for utility assistance. It is very, very key that we keep this building up kept and clean and ready to go. That’s what they’re helping us with here today.”
This particular project was part of a series of community services performed by the Navy today. This group also rolled up their sleeves to put a chain link fence up around the Salvation Army Family Store on Highway 49.
