National Youth Violence Awareness Week
Today students at Gulfport High School expressed themselves in the form of crazy socks, recognizing that everyone is different and that’s okay.
It’s part of how Gulfport is honoring National Youth Violence Awareness Week. Each day the students are doing something different in honor of those lost to school shootings. They also created videos with messages regarding depression and anxiety, what it means to be part of a civil society, feeling connected to the community, and more.
The student council also planted 122 flowers in memory of each student who has died in a school shooting since Columbine. Student Council member Carson Miller said, “This is important for our school because we’ve seen the national news of other schools going through terrible things and we wanted to make sure that our school never went through this kind of thing and make sure we’re unified in this.”
Friday represents ‘we are in this together’ and the students will wear Gulfport colors, blue and orange, as they create an uplifting skit and photo slideshow to recap the week.
