National Sailboat Race on the Coast
Sailors from all over the country are racing against each other in Ocean Springs at the Hobie 20 Nationals.
Fourteen sailboats from Texas, Ohio, Louisiana and even the Virgin Islands have come to the Coast for the race. The sailboats have been competing in a four day set of races, racing about 15 total times. This national championship is only open to Hobie 20 sailboats.
The race is hosted by the Ocean Springs Yacht Club. Former Commodore John O’Shaughnessy with the club tells News 25 since all the boats are the same, the race is strictly measuring the skill of the sailor. “It’s fun to watch this sport not die because there’s really two parts to sailing. One is competition, what you’re seeing now, and the other one is for pleasure which is not competition.”
The Hobie 20 Nationals continues Saturday. After the races wrap up, there will be an award ceremony for the winner at 4 tomorrow afternoon.
