National Blood Clot Alliance brings Red Bus Tour to Gulfport to raise awareness
GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- The National Blood Clot Alliance Red Bus Tour rolled into Gulfport with a life-saving message to spread awareness.
The National Blood Clot Alliance teamed up with Memorial Health System to educate the community on the warning signs of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms.
Lisa Lane said, “Being pregnant at the time that I was diagnosed, I was absolutely terrified. I was given no information. Increased heart rate, difficulty breathing, any signs like that, or throbbing in your legs or discoloration. Hopefully you can have people along the way that help educate you, it’s extremely scary.”
Early detection and education are critical, as blood clots can affect up to 900,000 Americans each year and contribute to as many as 100,000 deaths. Dr. Antoine Rizk said, “The prevention is very important. First, the immobility is one of the major risk factors that people develop blood clots. The prevention is to get out of bed and exercise. Even in the surgical population, we see it in the community. It can happen to anybody.”
From expert advice to community connection, this event created a space where people could learn, ask questions, and hear firsthand accounts from those who were directly impacted.
