NAACP investigating officer-involved shooting that left one dead in Moss Point

The NAACP of Jackson County spent hours on the scene investigating the officer-involved shooting in Moss Point.

The Moss Point community is still reeling after an officer-involved shooting left 27-year-old Toussaint Sims dead on Thursday night. Jackson County NAACP President Curley Clark said, “I’m very disappointed because Moss Point has so many problems and this just adds to the problem and we are trying to seek some solutions and bring the community together and then something like this happens. It is just very unfortunate.”

The NAACP has spent hours investigating this deadly shooting. News 25 spoke with the president of the Jackson County NAACP who says they arrived to the scene Thursday night around 7 p.m. “In all consequences the young man is dead and he was shot a number of times in the back. Some accounts say he was armed, but most accounts say he was unarmed.”

The NAACP has asked the Moss Point police chief to place the officer who was involved in this shooting on administrative leave until the investigation is over. “Depending upon the outcome of the investigation, if it was determined that the shooting wasn’t justified, that there was excessive force used then we are going to ask the district attorney to take it to the grand jury and seek some type of justice.”

For now the NAACP is asking the community to remain calm during the investigation. “The NAACP is on the case. We are going to ensure that justice is served and we are going to make sure the facts are brought forth.”
