Five dead, one injured in crash involving train and van on Highway 49 in Stone County

STONE COUNTY, Miss. (WXXV)– First responders are currently working a crash involving a train and van in northern Stone County.

Stone County Sheriff Todd Stewart tells WXXV the crash happened around 1 p.m. Friday at Plump Branch Road, which is just off Highway 49.

Stewart says delays in the northbound lanes of Highway 49 are expected for much of the afternoon.

According to Mississippi Highway Patrol, there were six occupants in the van. Authorities confirm five of the people in the vehicle died. One person was life-flighted to a hospital in New Orleans.
