MS Severe Weather Preparedness Week: Tornado Safety
Severe Weather Preparedness Week continues across the state ahead of the spring season, as declared by Governor Tate Reeves.
Today’s focus is on tornado safety. In 2019, Mississippi saw 78 tornadoes between February and May with 67 in April alone.
Harrison County Emergency Management Director Rupert Lacy tells News 25 how we can prepare in the event the Coast does experience a tornado in the next few months. “Have a way to get that message. Be it if it’s a tornado warning, you will get it over your cell phone. That will be a National Weather Service alert. We encourage everyone to maybe think about a weather radio, especially at night time. We’ve seen a fair share of tornado activity in the night. So, we want people to be able to get up and get into their safe place. Everybody in your family knows where to go in the house in that time of emergency.”
