MS Farms to School Network opens community garden in Biloxi
The Mississippi Farms to School Network held a grand opening for its new community garden.
It’s next door to the Salvation Army’s Kroc Center in Biloxi.
The garden was created to give families and children an opportunity to come out and learn how to grow their own food.
People are invited to visit the garden, plant their own produce, and then return to collect what they’ve grown.
The organization is also hoping to use this garden to teach kids economic skills by selling their produce to members of the Kroc Center in the near future.
The team started building the garden just a few months ago in April. Mississippi Farms to School Network Co-Director Umi Mills said, “We’re super excited. This has been a labor of love. It’s been hot. It’s been one thing after another in terms of pests, but once you see children out here playing and you see people admiring the plants, it makes it all worthwhile so it’s just…it’s been a blessing. It’s been a wonderful experience.”
Saturday’s grand opening also featured a cooking demo to show people how to cook their home-grown foods.
