MS Aviation Heritage Museum shares Bessie Coleman’s story through live performance

GULFPORT, Miss. (WXXV)- History is taking flight right here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Mississippi Aviation Heritage Museum has brought a pioneering aviator’s story to life.

The museum hosted ‘Gigi Coleman as Bessie Coleman’ for a powerful live portrayal of trailblazing aviator Bessie Coleman.

Through storytelling, historical detail, and dramatic performance, the program brings Bessie Coleman’s journey to life, highlighting her courage, determination, and refusal to give up on her dreams.

The special guest performer, Gigi Coleman, is Bessie’s great niece. She travels the country sharing her aunt’s remarkable story, inspiring new generations to aim high.

Bessie Coleman made history in 1921 as the first African American woman and first Native American woman to earn a pilot’s license at a time when both racial and gender barriers stood firmly in her way.
