‘Move to Learn’ at West Wortham

If you have kids, you know it is hard for them to sit still for long periods of times and teachers see this just as much.

That’s why the Mississippi Department of Education and the Bower Foundation created ‘Move to Learn’ in 2013. ‘Move to Learn’ is an initiative with online videos for teachers to use to get their students moving.

Today, at West Wortham Elementary and Middle School, ‘Move to Learn’ Coach Larry Calhoun gave a live demonstration of the videos. There are 55 videos online for teachers to use to give students a brain break.

These videos have been proven to help students’ abilities to learn and focus on their schoolwork. It also helps the teachers create a positive and effective learning environment.  Coach Calhoun said, “Children sometimes come to school and we don’t always know what they’re dealing with. We don’t always know what adults are dealing with, but school should be one place where we can tap into their happiness. We can allow them to associate learning with something positive. If a kid comes into the school and they are happy, what can that essentially do for the emotional climate of our school and every single classroom.”

Today was not only a chance to grow their teaching abilities at West Wortham, but also a celebration of their ‘A’ rating.
