Moss Point’s Back to School Rally

Pencils, notebooks, and folders: everything students need to begin their school year and it’s all free! The Moss Point School Board hosted their second annual Back to School Rally to get the students and teachers ready for the new school year this Friday.
Hundreds of students and teachers packed the Magnolia Middle School gym, ready to get their hands on free school supplies. It’s the second year the Moss Point School Board put together the Back to School Rally, an event to get everyone ready for the new school year. Moss Point Superintendent Dr. Shannon Vincent said, “The community coming together to make sure that our children have access to the school supplies that they need so that that is not a barrier and they’re able to come to school on day one ready to learn.”
Families lined up with tote bags to grab their classroom essentials. Sophomore Robyn Lee said, “It’s giving us an opportunity to give us school supplies and just get us back in the school spirit.”
Fourth Grader Skylah Goodman said, “Books and a tablet and crayons and pencils.”
By giving away the free school supplies, it not only gets the kids excited for the new school year, but it also helps out parents who say the supply list is getting more and more expensive each year. Parent Courtney Castillo said, “It’s really expensive, especially when you’re a single parent and then you have multiple kids at different schools and stuff. They have to have a lot for school supplies. It’s very important for them to come out and interact with the schools and stuff. When they’re given different school supplies and stuff, it’s giving them the chance to save some money.”
“We have parents and grandparents who are trying to make it with their students and this just gives them an avenue to get what they need and it takes the pressure off of grandparents and parents and those who may struggle,” said Dr. Vincent.
With 39 booths and over thousands of school supplies, it’s safe to say each student will be prepared for their first day of school this Friday.
