Moss Point’s 100 Men hosts inspirational assembly at Moss Point High
News 25 has been talking about the new Moss Point group Moss Point’s 100 Men. Today, they are back on our radar after hosting an assembly for Moss Point High School students.
Friday morning Moss Point’s 100 Men walked into the Moss Point High School gymnasium with a plan to share their stories with the students and inspire the youth. Moss Point’s 100 Men Founder Derek Taite said, “One thing we like to say when the student shows up, the teacher will appear. So, the teacher appeared today and hopefully the students will continue to be students and learn what their parents and teachers are teaching.”
The men who shared their stories today were all Moss Point High School graduates who, through their testimony, aimed to teach the children your circumstances don’t decide your future, only you do. Moss Point High School Principal Joe Griffin said, “The main thing I hope the kids take from this event is to improve themselves and improving themselves they can’t help but improve the school as well.”
The efforts put in by Moss Point’s 100 Men went a long way for youth like Celia Rodgers, who says she walked out of the assembly with a new perspective. “It made me rethink my plan about college. I feel like I had everything figured out, but really, you need to plan stuff out. You need to have a goal with your plan as well.”
“Just knowing that I did reach some kids today, you know, that’s the whole point of this movement. It’s to reach one, teach one, and to continue to gain our city back through unity and unity is power.”
Spoken word poetry was also shared with the students by Devin Christian Wade, a Gulfport man who was behind bars at the age of 17, but decided to change his ways after his poor decisions led him to near death experiences. Moss Point High freshman Kenneth Liaffitt said, “It really inspired me to be a better person and make Moss Point a better place because everything thinks Moss Point is a bad place and it’s not.”
