Moss Point students return to school

The EF-2 tornado that hit Moss Point just one month ago caused significant damage to the Moss Point High gymnasium.

However, despite the challenges, the Moss Point School District has shown resilience and determination, adopting a new flexible schedule as they prepare to welcome back students on July 20th.

Moss Point High’s gym was severely damaged by the tornado, but the school district acted swiftly to ensure the repairs were carried out with urgency. Principal Boyd West said, “They came in boots on the ground right after the storm. Started assessing damage, getting crews in place. We still have a few finishing touches we need to put on the building but all our teachers are in their classroom ready to go so we’re excited.”

Athletic Coordinator Delina James said, “Our maintenance team did an excellent job in preparing us for our upcoming season with volleyball being our first sport to start their season off.”

This is also the first year the Moss Point School District is implementing a new flexible schedule. Escatawpa Upper Elementary teacher Lori Cooley said, “My favorite part is seeing our babies again. The kids come in excited and ready for the new school year and a new start.”

Moss Point High teacher Venus Loffman said, “They’ve grown a little bit, gotten a little bit taller, a little bit more mature. They’re all ready for this year and were looking forward to having them this year.”

Moss Point High teacher Mortica Samuels said, “The same! Seeing my students from last year come back. They’re excited.  Some of them are driving, they are already asking for parking passes.”

Teachers can’t help but give their students a warm welcome as they begin for the first time ever on July 20th. “It’s definitely hot. I’m excited about the school year and with this early start, I’m very open and optimistic about what the school years bring.”

“I think we’re going to reap the benefits of the flexible schedule. When we get to the first intersession our teachers can decompress and I think that’s going to be a big help for them.”

The collective efforts of the school district and community serve as a testament to the strength and determination of Moss Point. “We will continue to push forward and do what needs to happen in order to make it back to what it used to be.”

Escatawpa Upper Elementary Principal Janice Richardson said, “In Moss Point, it takes a team and that’s exactly what we are, a team.”
