Moss Point School District aiming high for new school year

All of Moss Point School District staff gathered this morning at Magnolia Middle School to get ready and motivated for the new school year.

If you hear a little buzz around South Mississippi, it may be people talking about the Moss Point School District. In the past, the school district hasn’t seen the best of ratings and is going into the new school year with a ‘D’ rating, but Superintendent Shannon Vincent-Raymond is rallying the troops to start on a clean slate and take it up a notch. “We understand that we have a long way to go, but we are making strides every year and we’re celebrating those strides just so teachers understand that everything they do every single day matters.”

This past year, Escatawpa Upper Elementary saw a 93 percent passing rate on the first attempt for third grade reading. In addition, Kreole Primary had the most gains of the kindergarten MKAs scores out of all the schools on the Coast.

Vincent-Raymond says these teachers are determined. They believe every child needs a champion to encourage them and help them grow. “I feel that they’re optimistic, but they’re also very excited to be able to prove to the rest of the Coast and to the rest of the state that Moss Point is on the rise.”

All in, whatever it takes: these are the types of encouraging words that administrators and teachers are planning on using this year to further the growth of Moss Point School District. Magnolia Middle Assistant Principal Kewanna Riley said, “We have a common goal and that is the success of every single student within the school district. We are one community that is backing our students 100 percent.”

These Tigers say they are ready to roar into a progressive and successful year and to work their way up to becoming an ‘A’ rated school district. Moss Point Mayor Mario King said, “We want to see our school district have some higher test scores. We want our school district and our students to be able to compete with other students across the Coast and really across the country.”

Moss Point rings the bell for classes to begin on August 6th.
