Moss Point police chief first day on the job

The Moss Point Police Department turned a new page as Calvin Hutchins stepped into the role as the city’s newest chief of police.
News 25 stopped by the police department today to see how Chief Hutchins’ first day went as he takes the chief position following a controversial year for the department.
Calvin Hutchins is settling in well into his new seat at the chief’s desk, his first official day on the job. Born and raised in Moss Point, he’s happy to be back in his hometown and is looking forward to his time serving as the city’s newest police chief. “A humbling experience, very humbling. I’m grateful to be back home. We’ve got a lot to do here in Moss Point and we’re going to get everything done. Moving forward is what I’m talking about, just moving forward,” said Hutchins.
Hutchins began his career in law enforcement at the Moss Point Police Department and says he’s going to finish his career here as well. He says a lot has changed during his hiatus from the Moss Point PD during which he worked at the Pascagoula Police Department. His first order of business: getting to know his co-workers with the goal of ensuring a smooth transition. “It’s a whole new department. The only person that’s still here from when I first started is the deputy chief, but a bunch of new faces here. I’m just getting to know everybody and moving forward from this point,” said Hutchins.
“They’ve been real receptive. Everybody is welcoming me aboard. Everybody is glad to have me here. I’m glad to be back home, I can tell you that much,” said Hutchins.
They say they’re glad to have him as well. Patrol Commander Lt. Henry Bouganin said, “I think it’s going to be a positive change for the police department. He’s known in the community so it’s going to be a big help just speaking with the community because they already know him and trust him.”
Building up work relationships to build a better relationship with the community. “You can come talk to us. We want to be there to assist you. We want you to feel good about coming and talking to us because you are our eyes for us and the better you are out there working together with us, we can resolve a lot of issues,” said Hutchins.
