Moss Point mayor gives update on recovery at State of the City Address
Moss Point Mayor Billy Knight addressed a crowd about the state of the city.
Some of the most notable advances of the city include the development of a new recreation center and waterfront amphitheater.
The most impressive item is that the City of Moss Point has not had an officer involved shooting since November 2021. The main stream of police calls is domestic.
A tornado that destroyed multiple properties threw a wrench in the city’s plans. The city budgeted $28.8 million for the year and they need $40 million to provide the basic needs for the city.
The Mississippi Delegation sent a letter to President Biden’s desk, urging him to declare the city a disaster.
Mayor Knight explains why this declaration is necessary to help the city build back. “Of all houses that were destroyed, only one had insurance. For major damage, only four of them had insurance. For minor damage, there was nine. The total that was insured was 14. That’s why we’re pushing to get the FEMA declaration because it will give people some kind of financial support.”
The total number of houses affected was 165.
During the state of the city, the mayor also paid tribute to the later former mayor Robert Bird.
