Mobile mayor makes accusation that Biloxi is shipping homeless to city
A letter to the mayor of Biloxi from the mayor of Mobile, Alabama claims the city is sending homeless people to the Port City.
According to the letter from Mayor Sandy Stimpson, multiple homeless individuals reported that law enforcement officers in Biloxi approached them and insinuated they had the option of going to jail or to a homeless shelter in Mobile.
Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich ‘s offices responded to the letter, saying that the mayor is “misinformed” and that the City of Biloxi is working with homeless shelters in Mobile capable of offering them resources.
James Pennington with Back Bay Mission says visitors at the homeless shelters are sharing their own accounts. “I think when they’re displaced or taken to another community, it is detrimental to them. It would be like one of us moving to a new community and not knowing anyone.”
Pennington says he will be attending the next Biloxi City Council meeting where he hopes to get some answers.
