MLK Home Fire Safety Campaign
The American Red Cross is making it their mission to decrease the amount of serious injuries and deaths caused by fires by 25 percent over the next five years.
Today, they teamed up with the United Way and Mississippi Power to canvas neighborhoods in Moss Point to see what homes are in need of smoke alarms, as well as hand out home fire safety plans.
This is the third time the Red Cross has done this event in Moss Point on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
When volunteers came across a home without fire alarms, they gathered resident contact information and coordinated a date for the Moss Point Fire Department to go out and install one for free. “Moss Point is one of the busiest fire departments and we have a lot of fires that occur here in this community. We’re really trying to hit this neighborhood and make sure that everybody is safe,” said American Red Cross Program Coordinator Angie Grajeda. Moss Point Fire Chief Tommy Posey said, “Numbers have shown that the people with fire extinguishers that work in their house, fatalities go down, injuries go down and it allows them to get out safely.”
Although today’s event was in Moss Point, the Red Cross is teaming up with fire departments all across the Coast. If you’re in need of a smoke alarm, call the American Red Cross at 228-896-4511.
