Mississippi Tax Free Weekend

Tax Free Weekend is here.

The new school year is just around the corner and local stores will be packed this weekend as South Mississippians make the most of the state’s Tax Free Weekend.

Retailers and stores throughout Mississippi have been busy stocking their shelves with school supplies and clothes in preparation for Tax Free Weekend which will run through midnight Saturday.

The Gulfport Premium Outlet Mall is a popular spot each year with a constant flow of shoppers trying to get the best bang for their buck.

Back to school shopping also plays a major role this weekend as parents want to save as much as they can as they get ready to send the kids back to school.

The following items have been added to the tax free list:

• binders
• art supplies
• backpacks
• calculators
• pencils
• pens
• markers
• glue
• textbooks

Laptops and computers are not included since they exceed the $100 cap on tax exempt purchases.

You will save seven cents on the dollar for tax exempt purchases under $100. So on a $90 purchase, you’ll save $6.30 with the state’s seven percent sales tax deducted.
